The History of Makanacoon Cattery

I've been actively involved with animals all my life.  I became attracted to the Maine Coon cat after living for some time in Bath, Maine.  When medical reasons forced me to leave my 20-year teaching career in Health and Physical Education in Norfolk, Virginia, I made the decision to acquire my first Maine Coon and begin showing.  In 1994 , the Makanacoon Cattery was established.

My goal is to do what I can to contribute to the health, temperament and show potential of my cats.   Today, we are registered with the Cat Fancier's Association (CFA), The International Cat Association (TICA) and at this time, are breeder members of the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association (MCBFA).

What's The Meaning of the Makanacoon Cattery Name?

People often ask what our Cattery name means.   Makanacoon is derived from the Hawaiian word "Makana" (ma-ka-na) meaning, "gift."   This name seemed appropriate, since most of my life has always been centered around the Hawaiian culture (my love for the dance, music, flowers and language), and the belief that every animal that has come into my life was and is a special gift.  Therefore, most of my cats have been given Hawaiian names.
