Health Policy

Makanacoon Cattery is very proud of the cats in our breeding program and the outstanding quality offspring they produce.  Cats in our breeding program are carefully chosen based on pedigree and health history.

All Makanacoon cats are vaccinated for FVRCP (rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia) annually, and Rabies every 3 years.   They are also tested for Feline Leukemia (FELV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).

We test our breeding cats for HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). This is done by Board Certified Cardiologists using a color Doppler. We DNA test for the MyBPC-3 mutation. We test for SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) when needed, And we will soon be screening for HD (Hip Dysplasia) to get OFA ratings.

For additional information on HCM and DNA testing for the MyBPC-3 mutation, which is the one identified mutation which causes HCM in Maine Coon cats, please see the PAWPEDS HCM Testing Page.

In addition, the following web pages have good detailed technical explanations of HCM genetics:

For additional information on SMA and the genetic testing which can detect this condition, please see the PAWPEDS SMA Page.

Our kittens are vaccinated according to the latest AVHA protocols.   These call for an FVRCP vaccination at 9 and 12 weeks of age, and Rabies at 4 months old.   New owners are responsible for the 2nd FVRCP and Rabies vaccinations.

Our kittens go to their new homes very much "people-oriented", with excellent social skills and wonderful "purrsonalities".   They are exceptional companions for people of all ages, as well as for other pets.
